Entering the House or Building Number

With the State, City, and Street names entered into the GPS, the final piece of the destination address is the building or house number.

The LN740 doesn't display the valid range of house/building numbers along a given street -- a useful feature found on some other GPS units. For example, if you're not sure of the exact house number, knowing the range can help you guestimate a house number that is close to your destination.

Routing to an Address
Figure 47: Routing to an Address

Once the complete address has been input into the GPS, the LN740 displays the destination address on the map, and gives the option of either saving the address to the address book, or routing to the destination by pressing the "Go" button.

Navigating to the Destination Address

Tap on the Go Button in the previous screen and the LN740 starts routing to the destination address. In figure 45 (above), notice the large red arrow pointing to the destination on the map, easily marking the destination so you can see it on the map.

In my testing, route calculation was speedy, taking no more than a few seconds. For longer trips, the LN740 quickly calculates the initial turns so you can start driving, and then finishes calculating the remaining turns.

7. Finding a Restaurant

In GPS speak, a "Point of Interest" is a business address saved on the GPS. You can think of the POI database as a pre-loaded yellow pages. Most modern GPS devices come pre-loaded with a Points of Interest database, allowing you to find nearby businesses, such as restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and more.

LG's LN740 ships preloaded with about 7 million Points of Interest (POIs), and provides several different ways to search that extensive list.

POI Main Menu
Figure 49: POI Main Menu

Tapping on POI from the Main Menu brings up the POI screen, shown above. From here, you can specify the POI category you want to search for. The most commonly used categories have icons on the page: Food, Lodging, Shopping, Fuel & Auto Services, Transportation, and Entertainment.

Tapping on the "More" button in the lower-right brings up a second page of POI categories: Bank/ATM, Attraction, Emergency/Medical, Government Offices, Sports, and Others/Personal (Others/Personal is for POIs such as colleges, schools, laundry, hair & beauty).

Multi-category POI Search

Tapping on More again brings up the list of all POI categories, and allows you to specify multiple categories you want to search across.

LG's LN740 is the ONLY unit I've tested to date that allows you to search across multiple, user-specified POI categories. This is an excellent feature and powerful way to find POIs.

Search results can then be sorted alphabetically, or you can use the on-screen keyboard to spell the name of the business you are searching for.

Setting the Search Radius
Figure 52: Setting the Search Radius

Tapping on the "Near" button on the POI category page allows you to specify the search area. For example, if you're in New York and want to search for a train station in Boston, MA, you would tap on Near -> Other Address -> and then enter the address via the normal address input screen.

By default, POI search results appear in order of closeness to your current (or other specified) address.

The list can be re-sorted alphabetically by tapping on the Options button, or if you know the name of the business you searching for, tap on the keyboard icon and start to spell the name of the business.
