Global Locate Accuses SiRF of Patent Infringement

San Jose based GPS chip-maker Global Locate has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate competing GPS chip-maker SiRF, and four of SiRF's customers for patent infringement.

According to a news release on the ITC's website, Global Locate alleges that SiRF, Pharos, MiTAC, Mio, and E-TEN violated the Tariff Act of 1930 and imported certain GPS goods that violate patents owned by Global Locate.

Global Locate is also seeking a permanent cease and desist order. The ITC has approved Global Locate's request to investigate. Specifically, Global Locate claims SiRF stole certain patents relating to GPS fast fixes - technology that allows GPS receivers to obtain position tracking at a considerably faster speed.
