Magellan About to Release Maestro 4000, 4040, and 4050 GPS Devices

Magellan Maestro

I'm not sure what's going on over at Magellan, but they've been releasing new GPS units about once every 2 months for the past 12 months straight! After releasing the RoadMate 3000 and 6000T last year, and the RoadMate 2000, RoadMate 2200T and CrossoverGPS within the past 6 months, it looks like Magellan is set to update it's product lineup again. Not yet officially released, Magellan's Maestro series GPS units started appearing on TigerGPS' website today and were promptly removed a few hours later. Nevertheless, the specs look promising: all three Maestro units (the 4000, 4040, and 4050) will have a 4.3" WQVGA color touchscreen display, feature a new updated interface, SiRF Star III chipset, and NAVTEQ mapping data. Here are the details on each of the units:

  • Maestro 4000: Pre-loaded with NAVTEQ maps of the 48 U.S. states. No Bluetooth, no traffic. 1.6 million Points of Interest (POI). Suggested retail price of $449. Expected to start shipping in April.
  • Maestro 4040: Pro-loaded with NAVTEQ maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Bluetooth. Optional Traffic, and 4.5 million Points of Interest (POI). Suggested retail price is $599. Expected shipping date is late April/early May.
  • Maestro 4050: Pre-loaded with NAVTEQ maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Bluetooth. Traffic. 4.5 million Points of Interest (POI). The 4050 will also support voice recognition for voice-activated operation. Suggested retail price is $799. Expected ship date in May.

All three units will very likely have significantly lower street prices. If history is any indicator, I wouldn't bet the farm on these things getting Magellan's door on time. Still, I'm hoping to get my hands on one sooner rather than later -- it looks like we may finally have a competitor to Garmin's mighty nuvi!
