TomTom has confirmed that a small number of GO 910 units produced between September and November 2006 are infected with a virus (yikes!). Units that shipped with software version 6.51 are at risk. Not surprisingly, TomTom is downplaying the issue, calling the virus “low risk”, and “easily removable” by using any of the popular antivirus scanning software packages. TomTom is not saying which virus managed to find its way onto the Dutch vendor’s top-of-the-line GPS, but says if you see host.exe or copy.exe files present on the device, you’ve got the virus.
TomTom goes on to say: “Any customers who experience problems or have further questions are welcome to contact our Customer Support department.” Wow – and I thought shipping the GO 910 with a faulty windshield mount was crappy, but this is a new low. Personally, I think TomTom should offer free replacements to anyone who finds a virus on their unit. Why should you have to incur the cost of antivirus software and the inconvenience of backing up and cleaning the device (not to mention you’re entire computer, now that you’ve been connecting a virus infested GO 910 to your PC via the HOME dock for the past 4 months). Keep up the good work, TomTom!
