Harman Kardon & Sanyo to release Guide + Play GPS 500 (well, sort of)

Harmon Karden Guide & Play GPS 500

That's right - the name you already know and love for high-end audio equipment is getting into the Personal Navigation Device market. HK has teamed up with Sanyo and announced the Guide + Play GPS 500. Well, actually HK outsourced the manufacturing to Kinpo and licensed the navigation software from iGo. So neither Harman Kardon nor Sanyo actually manufactured this GPS -- although Harman Kardon did slap their name on the front! HK says they're the number 3 manufacturer in Europe, and Sanyo claims to be #1 in Japan. With those kind of deep pockets, I'd except nothing less than perfection. So what makes this unit special among the sea of GPS newcomers?

  • 4-inch WQVGA color touch screen display
  • Built-in upscale media player
  • A dedicated volume control wheel on the right side of the unit
  • Intuitive and easy-to-use menu system
  • Automatic 3D to 2D map panning based on your speed and distance from the next maneuver
  • Dedicated pedestrian mode for using the GPS on foot
  • Sort music playlists by artist, genre, title, or album
  • Support for video viewing (MPEG4 and WMV formats supported)
  • 5-hour rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • Built-in maps of the USA and Canada. SD memory slot for music and movies.

Just looking at the features, the Guide + Play 500 looks like it just might be a contender. Still, I'm always a bit skeptical when a company suddenly decides the GPS market is hot, and then farms out the hardware and software to third parties. It'll be interesting to see how the Harman Kardon GPS 500 will stack up against the players who've been doing GPS for years (Garmin, Magellan, TomTom). Suggested retail price is $499, available sometime in Q1 2007.

CES 2007 Coverage: NAVTEQ

NAVTEQ's Booth at CES 2007

GPS was one of biggest themes at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, so it should come as no surprise that both NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas had a large presence at the show. I stopped by NAVTEQ's booth and got the skinny on what's new at the world's largest mapping data provider.

CES 2007 Coverage: TomTom’s Booth – Nothing to See Here, Move Along!

TomTom's Booth at CES

Talk about disappointing! Given TomTom’s history of innovation and cutting edge products, I couldn’t wait to see what the Dutch team had cooked up for CES.

TomTom's Booth at CES
When I stopped by the booth, not only did I have to ask three different people wearing TomTom polo shirts if they could tell me what TomTom was announcing at CES, but then it turned out all TomTom had to show was an updated mount for the GO 510/910, a gooseneck mount, and a new leather carrying case. Blah…what a bore. Oh well, here goes:

Garmin nuvi 370

For the globetrotters out there, Garmin's new nuvi 370 and 670 will be crowdpleasers. The 370 and 670 ship with preloaded detailed street maps of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and over 30 countries in Europe.

CES 2007 Coverage: Dash Express - First Internet-Connected GPS

Dash Express

Dash Navigation created a lot of buzz at CES this year with their announcement of Dash Express, the world’s first and only Internet-connected GPS. According to Dash Navigation, Dash Express will feature two-way internet connectivity, and will leverage the network of other Dash Express customers.

By leveraging the online capabilities, Dash will provide dynamic traffic and destination information, including a limitless POI database that leverages Yahoo! Local Search, will automatically update your maps and GPS software, and allow you to wirelessly send addresses from a PC to the GPS unit.

CES 2007 Coverage: Garmin Unveils Astro GPS Dog Tracking System

Garmin Astro GPS Dog Tracking System

Perhaps the most unusual GPS product I saw at CES this year was Garmin's newly announced Astro product. Designed specifically for sporting dogs and their owners (a.k.a. hunters), The Astro system has two components: the dog’s transmitter (called the DC 20) and the user’s handheld receiver (named the Astro 220).

CES 2007 Coverage: Magellan Unveils CrossoverGPS, Announces Traffic Kit and Crossover upgrade kit for 2200T

Magellan's Booth at CES 2007
This week at CES I stopped by Magellan’s booth and got to see the latest offerings from the legendary house of Magellan. The biggest announcement at Magellan was the release of the CrossoverGPS. A few weeks ago I noticed Magellan had removed all references to the RoadMate 2200T from their website. It turns out they have re-branded the unit the CrossoverGPS, and are positioning the unit as an “all-in-one” device. The company also announced the TrafficKit for the RoadMate 2200T and CrossoverGPS, a CrossoverGPS upgrade option for existing RoadMate 2200T owners, and more.

CES 2007 Coverage: First Look at the Garmin StreetPilot c580

Garmin StreetPilot c580
Garmin's StreetPilot c550 was one of my favorite GPS units of last year. It shares the same mapping data, routing engine, and POI database as the nuvi 660, but its interface is even easier to use than the nuvi because the StreetPilot doesn't have all the features the nuvis have. If you want a really simple unit that even your grandparents could use, you can't beat the simplicity of the StreetPilot c550. The StreetPilot c580 is identical to the c550, but adds MSN Direct capabilities to the mix. Suggested retail price for the c580 is $857.13, so I'd expect a street price of something like $799.
