Garmin to air commercial during SuperBowl XLI

Garmin Maposaurus

On February 4th, 2007, Garmin will air a 30-second commercial during SuperBowl XLI, making Garmin the first ever GPS manufacturer to advertise during the SuperBowl. The spot will air midway through the Super Bowl's second quarter. According to Garmin’s press release, the commercial is filmed in a sixties-esque grainy 35-mm film style, and shows an regular Joe lost behind the wheel. The motorist decides to refer to his paper map, and so he begins unfolding the map. And unfolding it, and unfolding, and unfolding… The map just gets larger and larger as he continues unfolding it, until it finally morphs into “Maposaurus” and begins threatening the driver.

At just that moment, another car drives up along side Maposaurus, only this car is equipped with a Garmin nuvi 660. The passenger in this car then transforms into a superhero, and uses the nuvi to defeat Maposaurus.

The ad was created by Fallon Worldwide advertising agency, and, according to the agency, attempts to show that Garmin “is a very friendly brand for every user.” Brian Tierney, creative director of Fallon, goes on to say that “the most important message, of course, is that Garmin is the undisputed champion in the navigational system arena”.  Don’t want to wait for the SuperBowl, or (gasp) already have plans for Sunday night that don’t include watching the game in a t-shirt and drinking beer from a can? Then head over to Garmin’s blog and you can watch the extended 2:30 version. I just watched the whole, painful ad, and can’t help wondering who this ad is targeting?
