CES 2007 Coverage: Navigon Announces Pocket LOOX N100 and Porsche Design 9611

Navigon Pocket LOOX N100
Navigon announced two new GPS products at the Consumer Electronics Show: The Pocket LOOX N100, and the Porsche Design 9611.

Navigon N100 Nav Screen
Designed to go "anywhere", the Pocket LOOX N100 is co-developed by Fujitsu-Siemans and Navigon. Fujitsu-Siemans makes the hardware, and Navigon's MobileNavigator Premium software powers this GPS. The N100 will retail for $499. Available in March 2007.

Navigon N100 vs Razr
Lighter than a Motorola Razr phone, and only slighter larger in size, the Navigon N100 looks like an interesting product for pedestrian usage, or for those who want to bring a portable GPS on business trips. The N100 includes a built-in stylus pen (although you can also just use your finger), and the display can be switched between landscape and portrait views. NAVTEQ maps and SiRF's high performance GPS receiver in an ultra-small form factor could end up being an awesome GPS unit indeed -- the screenshots I saw in the booth look promising, but we'll have to wait and do a full review before passing judgment. Here's to hoping Navigon's Mobile Navigator software doesn't suck...

Navigon Porsche 9611
Navigon has partnered with Porsche Design to create its higher-end PND, the 9611. Available by summer '07, the 9611 will retail for $899, and will include all the same features found on the less expensive N100 but will add Bluetooth, a larger screen, subscription-free traffic data from Clear Channel (free lifetime real-time traffic updates), pre-loaded Zagat guide data for North America for hotel, restaurant, nightlife, attractions, and gold courses. The 9611 runs Navigon's Mobile Navigator Premium software.

Navigon Porsche Design 9611
The Navigon / Porsche Design 9611 includes a stylus, battery, mini SD card pre-loaded with North American maps, wall charger, car charger, USB cord, car mount, headphones, manuals, and the MobileNavigator Premium software on CD-ROM.

Technical Details:

  • 520MHz Intel CPU
  • 64MB RAM + 64MB ROM
  • High sensitivity GPS u-blox Antaris4 SuperSense (16 channels)
  • 4.3" wide screen (16:9) color touch-screen display
  • Dimensions: 4.84" W x 3/2" H x 0.79" D (123 x 81 x 20 mm)

  • 1400 mAh lithium-ion rechargeable battery
  • MP3 player

Navigon Porsche Design 9611
Although the 9611 doesn't have an integrated FM transmitter, it does have one thing I've never seen before: both an on-board speaker on the GPS unit itself, as well as a high audio quality speaker embedded into the (large) windshield mount. I'm not a huge fan of enormous windshield mounts, so I'm a little uneasy about this approach. That said, the 9611 does have some interesting features, including:

  • Zagat points of interest data
  • Free real-time traffic data (Clear Channel traffic data source"
  • Street first or city first destination address entry
  • ZIP code search
  • Predictive spelling support
  • text-to-speech
  • speed limit sign and speed alerts
  • Brand icons

Like other Navigon GPS units, the 9611 is a Windows CE 5.0 based device that runs MobileNavigator Premium software. Look for the 9611 this summer. Suggested retail price is $899.
