14. Routing Engine Performance

One of the most critical components of any in-car GPS is the routing engine. Not surprisingly, it's also one of the most difficult things to get right, as there are so many variables to consider. The RoadMate 2200T ships with new NAVTEQ mapping data, so that is a major plus. The two largest mapping data providers are NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas. NAVTEQ is more accurate and complete in North America, so it's preferable to buy a GPS that uses NAVTEQ rather than Tele Atlas. Time and time again I find addresses that are either missing or incorrect in Tele Atlas' data, yet they are correct on NAVTEQ's maps.

That said, there is a lot more to routing than just the mapping data provider. How a given GPS will determine the "best" route is the result of not only the mapping data, but also how many additional data points, or attributes, are factored into the equation. For example, are certain roads closed after hours or on the weekend? What is the average rate of speed for a given road? Statistically speaking, more accidents happen when making left turns as opposed to right turns; is the GPS unit factoring that into the route? Each company takes all this data and compiles it in different ways. The number of attributes used varies depending on how much money the manufacturer is willing to spend.

How did the RoadMate 2200T's routing engine stack up? Let's take a look: For the first routing test, I entered a starting address in Connecticut, and a destination address of 135 Central Park West in New York City. I compared the route the 2200T calculated to that of the more expensive Garmin nuvi 660, Google Maps, and TomTom's GO 910.

The results shown above are interesting: The RoadMate 2200T does a decent job routing here, choosing an acceptable route and doing a significantly better job than TomTom's routing engine. TomTom scored the worst in this test, choosing a route that was almost 25 minutes longer. To conserve space, I'm only showing the top 3 in the chart above. Although the Magellan performed acceptably, it was unable to match Garmin's outstanding routing engine or Google Maps' chosen route. Notice that the RoadMate actually has us arriving with the destination address on our left, meaning we would have to circle the block or make an illegal U-turn to actually arrive with the destination address on our right. The Garmin and Google Maps differ only slightly in their routes, and both get it right, navigating us in such a way that the destination is on our right. Also interesting is that although all three routed us basically along the same route, the Garmin is considerably more aggressive with its estimated travel time, shaving a full 10 minutes off Google's estimate, and 13 minutes shorter than Magellan's estimate. Having personally made this trip many times, the Garmin chose the route I would consider "best", although Garmin's time estimate is too optimistic -- the actual drive time tends to be close to 1 hour 40 minutes.

As a second test, I entered the same starting address in Connecticut, and as a destination address put 17 N. 6th Street, New Bedford, MA.

178 mi (about 3 hours 15 mins)

On this test, the Garmin nuvi and Google Maps produced identical results (although Google is slightly more verbose in its instructions). All three chose identical routes once we were on a major highway. However, Magellan's RoadMate chooses a slightly different route getting us from the address in Connecticut to the I-84 highway onramp, although the Magellan route takes the same amount of time as Google and Garmin's. Again, Garmin's routing engine is more aggressive with its estimated travel time -- Garmin's estimate is 21 minutes shorter than Google Maps', despite the fact that they both have chosen the exact same route.

The routing engine on the RoadMate 2200T produced acceptable results, soundly beating TomTom and Alpine. In my opinion, Magellan's routing engine isn't quite as good as Garmin's, although it does come in a close 2nd place.

15. What About Real-Time Traffic?

The RoadMate 2200T doesn't come with integrated traffic capabilities right out of the box. Although the 2200T is touted as being "easily upgradeable" to include real-time traffic data, I could find no traffic features anywhere in the RoadMate's menu system, nor is there any mention of traffic data in Magellan's manual. Magellan says the life traffic feature will be available sometime within the next month or so. The traffic upgrade kit will cost $99 and will include 3 months of traffic data. After that, it'll cost you an annual subscription fee of $59.99.
