VW prototypes next-gen Nav system, uses Google satellite imagery

VW-Google

In what sounds like the coolest in-car navigation system ever developed, Volkswagen has teamed up with Google and chip maker NVidia to create a 3D GPS navigation system that provides drivers with a Google Earth-like view of upcoming maneuvers. VW believes current GPS systems display map information in a non-intuitive way, and that a photo representation of the surrounding area is a better way to convey the information.

The system was shown at CES last month in Las Vegas, and VW says this system should make it into their production cars. Information Week has the skinny HERE

Update: CNET has posted a review of the system and includes a video showing the system in use.
